I am not what I am

The modern Iago and the power of words.

During my studies at university I only adored one writer: William Shakespeare. My favorite written? Otello. My favorite figure, Iago. Leaving aside the plot of this tragedy, today I am talking to you about Iago’s personality and the power that words have, then projecting them into the current era.

IAGO: he is fascinating in his being, dark, longing, full of anger and resentment, ingenious, crafty, insane and full of feeling, superb; in the eyes of all, a personality who is very well built, he is ‘honest’. It is the dark side that every person has and which fortunately often remains hidden. But what does it do? Why is He so “intense” and capable of conditioning events and people? By deepening the human soul I made my opinion and I want to expose it.

Iago always tells the truth but he does it by omitting some parts, seizing the right moment and above all studying the events, using the weaknesses and feelings of others; basically yes, he tells the truth but he is not sincere.

He is in love with his being and compared to others he has understood himself and therefore also the senses and perceptions that we can all have. ‘Othello’ is a very modern and impactful Shakespearean tragedy, I invite you to read it.

It is not only the character of a book, Iago appears in anyone’s life even today.

THE MODERN IAGO: now let’s think about this figure and insert it into the modern era. Who is Iago today? We could all be.
Anyone, for various reasons, acts commanded by his own feelings. Some of us, what I call ‘prime numbers’ go far beyond words, investigating why and how and when. The others, on the other hand, follow their senses without ever wondering why an event started or a word, even the wrong one, is said.

The first category can become the ‘modern Iago’, the second category instead becomes part of the dynamic that the first puts on stage.

The so-called ‘prime numbers’ have understood what the weaknesses of others are and can use them. Let’s take a practical example: let’s say there is a group of people also friends and that Iago is inside. Well, Iago chatting with one of them (a person whom we have clarified has already studied and knows where to fit and how) casts doubt on another one of the group, for any reason. What happens is powerful: the word of Iago has insinuated the doubt and even if this person is lucid and strong, this little doubt begins to make its way. The doubt is there is hidden but there is. It will be enough for the (unsuspecting) person of the insinuation to say or do something strange to make the doubt become reality! At the same time, it will not take much for the group to become part of the scene.

A single word, a small doubt, a small insinuation are very powerful weapons in today’s society as it was.
For me if the senses are 5, Iago represents the sixth. It is inherent in all of us, it is the ability to make something happen. Whoever comes into contact with it and becomes aware of it, is devastated or understands it and decides to use it also for good. Why yes, Iago looks like a malicious character but at the same time it could be the exact opposite! It depends on us and what our nature is. In any case, anyone who understands that becomes powerful!

A single word can instill joy or pain.
We are immense, capable of feeling great sensations. It is unhappiness and dissatisfaction that make us bad and cloud us.
The secret is to trust and think that ‘everything will be all right’. You are scared? And why! Fear of suffering? But if you are unhappy what you have to lose. At least trying and breaking down the wall you could try new sensations.

What do you say? We try?

“Poor and content is rich, and rich enough,
But riches fineless is as poor as winter
To him that ever fears he shall be poor”
